The Australian Club was founded in 1878. The present clubrooms were erected in three stages. Lloyd Tayler was the architect for the first two stages, erected 1879 and 1884 which comprise 78 feet of the William Street frontage. In 1893 this facade was extended southwards and the four storey rendered brick structure with attic and basement was completed as we know it today. The architect was J Charlesworth.
